Following as Children

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.   ~Ephesians 5:1,2, 9

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children.

So, we hear all the time that being as little children is a requirement for seeing heaven. (And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3) What does becoming like little children mean? Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible puts it this way: “That is, unless ye learn to entertain an humble, and modest opinion of yourselves, are not envious at one another, and drop all contentions about primacy and pre-eminence, and all your ambitious views of one being greater than another, in a vainly expected temporal kingdom.” But this verse is telling us to follow as children do.

So how do children follow?

Children trust that those they look up to and follow know what is best for them. In following God we are to trust that He knows what is for our best good.

Children accept what we say as truth. God wants us to accept His Word as truth.

Children love to imitate. We currently have a 1.5 year old girl staying at our house. She copies just about everything we do. She’ll follow us around doing what we do. (It encourages us to be extremely careful what we do and say, but that’s beside the point.) Up at the school where I work the children are constantly copying each other (and me). They say what I say, if I say something is good (like food they don’t like) they immediately agree with me. Jesus tells us, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48) and “Be ye holy; for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). God wants us to imitate Him. He wants us to have His character reproduced in us. He wants us to follow Him, and by following Him and observing Him and spending time with Him, to do the things we see Him do;  act the way we see Him act.

Children joyfully and eagerly walk in our footsteps. Jesus walked this pathway before us. Joyfully and eagerly we are to place our feet where He placed His and not deviate from the path appointed for us.

So, let’s reword that verse.

Be ye therefore followers of God, as children. Trusting that He knows best, accepting His Word as truth, joyfully and eagerly following in His footsteps and striving to imitate Him. Walking in love, for Christ also loves you…You are light in the Lord, walk therefore as children of light.”
